More and more home builders are using vinyl siding. Not only that, but many people who are wanting to update the exterior of their home are choosing to use vinyl siding over many other exterior options. Why? There are many reasons from the easy maintenance, clean look, quick installation, and affordability that make it an easy choice.
The key to vinyl siding is in the installation. Whether it is replacing damaged panels, replacing older siding, or completely removing a different exterior and replacing it with new siding, the only people that should be doing the work are professionals. Many manufacturers require installers to go through a thorough installation class before giving them the ability to buy and install their product. Before hiring a contractor to do the work, be sure to check state and local business associations to see if there are any complaints on file. Also, look at how those were resolved. Be sure the contractor is properly licensed and has proper certificates. Ask for references, and take a look at not just new work but work that was completed over the past few years as well.
When it comes to vinyl siding, there are many benefits to having it installed on the home’s exterior. Probably first and foremost is the color. There is a vast selection of colors and shades available. This type of exterior product actually has color pigment that goes through all of the material. This helps ensure that, when a kid’s basketball bounces off the side of the house and scratches it, it is far less noticeable. Installation goes fairly quickly and so do repairs, if needed. Many manufacturers are also now investing in technology so that they can produce a product that can withstand up to 180 mph winds. This is great if the home is in tornado prone or hurricane prone areas. This type of home exterior also meets most energy efficient programs. Another benefit is that it doesn't require continual touch ups or painting. The color life span is typically 10 to 15 years. It is also less expensive to install on the exterior of the home. All of these factors have made this product a more desirable purchase.
Some basic “need to knows” with vinyl siding are maintenance, cleaning, and warranty information. Since this type of home exterior is virtually maintenance free, more time can be spent hitting a round of golf or enjoying the summer with the kids. Once a year, the exterior should have a good washing. Most people “in the know” do not recommend using a pressure washer to clean it. If one is used by choice, be sure to check with the manufacturer’s warranty and information guide to make sure it is used properly. The recommended cleaning is with a soft cloth or soft bristled brush. Using most mild household cleaners should do the job. Most manufacturers include cleaning guidelines with the product. As for maintenance, there really isn't much to do besides the once a year cleaning. Check periodically for any cracks or punctures and replace panels as necessary. Some contractors also recommend re-caulking between siding and trim and along the joints. Be sure to check all the warranty information before any work is done. For example, painting can void the warranty with many manufacturers. If there are any questions, most companies have a customer service number to call, and they can assist with more specific questions than may be laid out in the warranty information.
