Siding

When you are considering siding for your home, you have a few options to think through.  There are basically four types that are used today and they are as follows:

•    Vinyl
•    Wood Plank and Beveled Wood
•    Cement Fiber
•    Aluminum

The first one we will look at is vinyl siding.  It is practically maintenance free once it is installed.  It does not need to be painted and is available in a wide array of colors.  It is possible to get it in horizontal, vertical or diagonal strips.  It features interlocking flanges that shield the interior walls from the weather and can be a very cost effective option.

Next you have wood plank and beveled wood siding.  This is one of the oldest types that you’ll find.  It is damage prone from things like water, insects, wood rot and splitting.  This can be a costly endeavor and isn’t always recommended by professionals for these reasons.

Cement fiber siding is also an option.  This is one of the newer options available to those who are updating their homes or just building a new one.  It looks a lot like natural wood grain when it is finished and is quite affordable.  It is very durable and made from recycled materials.  This option also requires very little maintenance, much like vinyl.

Lastly you have aluminum siding.  This option is a little bit pricier, but it is very durable and requires very little maintenance.  The biggest problem with this material is that it is often prone to denting.  This could be costly over time.

So how do you make this decision?  It depends on what you are aiming for as far as durability, price and function.  If money is no object and you like the wood plank then that could be the option that is right for you.  However, if you are looking at a long term investment that will require the least expense and the least maintenance, then you might want to consider vinyl.

Vinyl is probably the most popular of the four materials.  It is easy to maintain and requires a good power wash about once a year to keep it looking fresh year after year.  If it is kept clean, you can expect your vinyl to last for many years to come.

Other things to consider when making your choice would be the weather in your particular area.  Where are you located?  Do you live close to an ocean?  Are you in a climate that tends to have rough and harsh winters?  Do you live in an area that is mostly dry year round?  Do you live in a high humidity climate?  When you consider the conditions that your home has to weather you will also be able to make the best choice for your home.

This is an investment that will add curb appeal to your home, and an exterior renovation will add overall value to your home once it is completed.  There has never been a better time than now to make your home shine!
