When walking into a home for the first time, the home can be easily dated by the style of hardware that is used throughout the house.  Outdated knobs and handles easily stand out, and they are also easily replaced.  When doing a renovation or remodeling project, this is an easy way to bring a dated kitchen or bathroom back to life and make it modern.  Not only is it easy, but it is relatively inexpensive to do this type of an overhaul as well.

Sometimes kitchen cabinets have knobs or handles as hardware, but sometimes there are no types of knobs on the outside of the cabinets.  Some cabinets were designed without handles and knobs to represent a sleeker look and a more fashionable decorum for the kitchen. 

Another way that a home may be dated is the door knobs that are used.  At one time, brass or brass colored hardware was desirable and used in every room in the home.  It was not unusual to see brass faucets, knobs, handles, towel holders, and towel rings and other types of fixtures throughout the house.  Even the door hinges were made of brass.  However, that was a couple of decades ago, and now it only serves to make a home look more dated than most homeowners want it to be.  If a homeowner is considering reselling their home, this should be an area of concern.  Today’s homeowner opts more for chrome fixtures.  This is the leading trend in homes today.

Many times, a handle or a knob is added to a drawer that cannot be opened because it is part of the sink cabinet or part of an area that something else attaches to, and these are called dummy handles.  It is not unusual to see one or two somewhere within a home.  While all efforts are made in more modern builds not to have these areas, they are still found when doing renovations or remodels. 

The great thing about hardware is that it is easily changed even when new versions have been purchased and installed.  It is not uncommon to get the fixtures home and installed by professionals only to find that they really aren’t what were desired.  Removing them and installing different ones is not necessarily difficult, but can be costly. 

In the past, some knobs for the door and other areas of the home were made of glass.  These pieces are difficult to find when looking for authentic replacements.  However, there are replicas available.  Now there are many different types of materials from which hardware is made.  It is possible to find various different knobs, hinges, hooks, handles, and other types of fixtures in a variety of shapes, sizes, and colors.  From glass to chrome, there are many that are available from the very tiny to the oversized. 

Old cabinets can be revived by simply staining them and replacing the knobs or handles on doors.  This is a great way to change the décor of a room completely without a lot of money being spent to do so.
