Flooring

When it comes to flooring choices, there are many from which to choose.  The choices are as individual as the person that is making the decision.  Some people prefer carpeting while others opt for hardwood.  It all depends on what the needs of the family are and what the area or the use that the room will serve.  While carpet or wood may be the first thing that people think about when they think about the types of materials that are out there, the truth is there are far more than that to be considered.

Flooring comes in a wide array of materials such as ceramic tile, bamboo, stone, travertine, carpet, hardwood, engineered hardwood, wood laminate, porcelain, stone and many others.  Each material comes with its own set of pros and cons so it is important to understand the maintenance of each before making a choice.  It is also important to understand what type of structure will be receiving the material.  An older home that is being restored back to the period in which it was built may want to stay with the materials that were originally used in the home.  In this case, choosing a wood product may be the best route to go.  Newer homes can choose from any type of material but it is important to keep in mind that in areas such as the kitchen, the flooring and the countertops should complement one another.

There are other considerations that need to be given attention, such as the purpose that the area or the room will serve for the family or the business.  If there will be a lot of traffic, then a hardier material should be chosen.  However, if warmth and softness is required, then a softer material such as carpeting may be the best option.  Some materials come with their own set of maintenance issues and this should be taken into consideration when making the choice.

In the past, the flooring of choice for most home owners and potential buyers was wall to wall carpeting.  Of course times change, and with this change one can see the fact that wood or engineered wood is the preferred option for many who are in the market to buy a home today.  Of course there are other rooms where ceramic tile or stone is preferred, such as in the bathroom.  Outdoor living areas and patios have given rise to materials such as stone.

Some materials for flooring are much more expensive than others.  This may also be the driving force behind the final decision that some home owners or business owners end up making.  Some woods are more expensive than others and the same can be said for the different styles of carpeting.  Ceramic and porcelain can vary from the very inexpensive to the extremely expensive, so there are some options if this is the desired material of choice.

There are a lot of options for the home owner today and with a little research or an experienced building contractor, the right material will be found.
