Flooring

If you are looking into what type of flooring to select for your home, you have many materials from which to choose.  Whether you are remodeling or renovating because you are selling your home, repairing damage, or just wanting a fresh new look, flooring can set the tone for the rest of your home’s décor.

Carpet used to be the thing that everyone gravitated toward.  It was warm, soft and available in so many different styles, lengths, grades and colors.  Fads came and went such as shag carpeting, but many manufacturers began using material that was more cost effective, often making the carpet something that was less durable and not made to last for an extended period of time. Of course, you could always go with the more expensive brands to circumvent the problem, but this was not something that everyone could afford. So people began to look at new horizons where flooring was concerned.

Today’s home buyer usually wants either hard wood flooring or tile, due to its durability and the fact that it is very easy to clean. Some opt to have it everywhere in the home with the bedrooms being the exception.  However, a new trend is to have hard wood throughout the house and adding area rugs in high traffic areas and rooms like the bedroom.  This is probably the top selling option at this time in the market today.

However there are many other types of materials available to those who are remodeling or putting the finishing touches on a new home.  Here are only some of the options as there are too many to list all of them:

•    Laminates
•    Tile
•    Stone
•    Vinyl
•    Linoleum
•    Cork
•    Bamboo
•    Polished concrete

What you decide upon of course will be based on what you are willing to pay and able to afford per square foot.  Some options are extremely expensive but quite durable and very long lasting, while others are very inexpensive but do not last nearly as long.

Tile is a popular option that once was scorned because it was cold to the touch in the winter.  Today you can install heating under the tile that keeps them warm so you do not have to endure putting your bare feet on a cold surface.  This has made tile once again a popular choice, especially in bathrooms and kitchens where water is a concern.

Many of the material options will depend on how the rooms are used and how much traffic goes through each room.  Hard wood can be polished and buffed to remove scuffs and scratches making it ideal for any room that is used for almost any purpose.  However a more porous product such as bamboo may not be suitable for every room or for high traffic areas.

As with any home renovation project, you should always hire a contractor or professional in the field to install these materials.  They are licensed and insured and have years of experience.  They are trained to overcome such obstacles as uneven surfaces that are often found in older homes.  These could be quite problematic to someone trying to do it themselves.  Hiring a professional is always a smart idea.  Unless you are a jack of all trades, chances are that you might end up biting off more than you can chew.  Always consult a professional and have your flooring installed properly the first time.
