Filing Home Insurance Claims

There are a number of reasons someone may need to hire a contractor, and sometimes, home insurance claims are going to be filed.  Knowing who to trust and how to choose the right contractor is an important part of protecting the rights and assets of the property owner.  The good news is that most companies will allow the property owner find a preferred contractor.

Filing home insurance claims are generally the responsibility of the property owner, but, in some cases, the contractor is allowed to file for the property owner.  To guarantee that the consumer knows what to expect, it is essential to know what questions to ask and what to demand from potential contractors.

However, knowing how to find the best contractor can be a difficult process.  Many residential property owners are not aware of several facts on how to protect their assets and property.  Fortunately, there are rights that every consumer has to guarantee that they will experience less fraudulent scams.

What are a few things to learn about a potential contractor?

-    Does the company specialize in something?  Does that specialization cover the property owner’s needs?
-    Does the company subcontract the work, or do they have their own crew?
-    How long has the company been around?
-    What licenses do the companies carry?  Are those licenses current?
-    Is there a warranty?
-    Does the contractor carry liability coverage and workman’s compensation?
-    What is the estimated time of completion?
-    Who is responsible for the cleanup of the property upon completion?
-    What permits will be needed?

If the company is trustworthy, reputable, and dependable, such questions will not be an issue for the contractor.  Schedule several general contracting companies to come out to the residence and get a quote.  In addition, always get the answer in writing!  This is called a contract.  A contract helps guarantee the rights and responsibilities of both parties.  Home insurance claims, however, may not always cover the cost of elective property improvements.  The residential property should have coverage for damaging issues such as fire and water, theft, destruction of property, and a few other things as defined by the policy.

Look for a reputable contractor to hire.

-    Ask neighbors, family, and friends for local renovators or builders.
-    Check out their references of past clients.
-    Do some investigation with the local Better Business Bureau.

Of course, be sure to keep the homeowners’ policy updated.  This will cover any possible home insurance claims filed during the renovation or repair process.  Being prepared starts with carefully choosing the right contractor that will be able to provide the necessary tools.  This will, most likely, guarantee a successfully completed project each and every time they are hired.

Home insurance claims are often an inevitable part of property ownership.  When choosing a contractor for a renovation or repair, thinking about that policy now will guarantee that the property owner has all those corners covered.  A reputable contractor will get the job done under contract and to the resident’s satisfaction.  A reputable contractor will also be able to put their work under warranty.
